That's why there are above-ground double-walled storage tanks made of two layers of steel, an inner tank and an outer tank, with an empty space (interstitial space) between them. The role of the double wall is to collect leaks in the interstitial space between them. No fuel will leak into the environment, because this leakage will be detected in advance by the special equipment mounted on the tank.

For single-walled storage tanks, a retention sump is build under it, which will collect leaks if they occurs.

There are single wall storage tanks with sump, which collects 110% of the tank capacity.

However, iron transforms over time, therefore there may be traces of corrosion, rust, cracks that can cause leaks, so it is recommended to do regular maintenance of the tank and the equipment mounted on it, to avoid the risk of leaks that may end up in the environment.

Overload prevention system

The system consists of a overfill protection device mounted on the charging pipe or an alarm.

The overfill protection device is in fact an electronic sensor, which may be fitted with an acoustic warning system.

Overfilling occurs when delivering fuel. With an alarm fitted, you will receive a warning signal when overfilling. You will then turn off the fuel supply to avoid the risk of fuel leaking from the tank, spilling and contaminating the ground.

The nozzle, hose, filters, should be positioned in a secure area with a sump/tray to collect spillage that occurs during refuelling, so that excess does not end up on the ground.

A safety cabinet, attached to the fuel tank and secured by a padlock, provides additional protection against theft or bad weather.
